The Weight of Perception: How UK Society Shames Those Who Care About Their Looks

We’ve all been there, wanting to change our bodies because of a certain number on a scale or fitting into a certain size.

Hey lovelies!

I’m back with another newsletter, and this week, I’m happy to share a really deep conversation I had with Bethany, an incredible online fitness coach who’s been empowering women for over a decade.

As someone who works in beauty and aesthetics, it was great to sit down with her and dive into a topic close to both our hearts: the connection between how we look, how we feel, and how we show up in the world.

The reality is confidence starts with acknowledging that caring about how we look isn’t shallow; it’s about feeling good in our skin and projecting our best selves.

Meet our expert

Bethany’s work centres on helping women crush their fitness goals through exercise, nutrition, and mindset shifts. But beyond the workouts and diets, she’s all about helping her clients dig into their “why” and uncover what’s driving their fitness journeys. It’s about more than just numbers on a scale or the size of our clothes; it’s about reclaiming control over our health and mental well-being.

We’ve all been there, wanting to change our bodies because of a certain number on a scale or fitting into a certain size. But as Bethany put it, we have to go beyond the numbers and really dig into the why behind our fitness journey.

The ‘magic’ number

We all know that “magic number” we aim for, whether it’s a certain weight or clothing size. I’ve been that person, too.

I remember when I used to obsess over being a size 8, thinking that would make me feel good enough. But Bethany and I got real about how sometimes it’s less about the way we look and more about how we feel.

For Bethany, like me, it’s been a journey from being a size 20 to a size 10. For her, it wasn’t just about the number but reclaiming control over her health and mental state. She explained that her journey wasn’t just about shedding pounds, it was about shedding toxic relationships with food and learning how to nourish herself without guilt.

We both agreed that this unhealthy focus on a number often comes from societal pressure, like growing up in an era where "size zero" was the ultimate goal, and “fast fixes” were everywhere.

Bethany shared her own struggle with the binge and restrict cycle and how it was mentally consuming. She’s now found a balance, and she wants others to experience the same freedom.

It’s about you!

The most important part? It’s not about fitting into someone else's idea of "beautiful", it’s about feeling good in your skin, and starting from a place of self-love and strength.

Bethany and I both agreed that the real change comes when you start focusing on health and wellbeing instead of appearance.

The 2023 Sport England survey revealed that people who focus on health and wellbeing (rather than looks) are 70% more likely to stick with their fitness journey.

That’s huge!

When we focus on feeling stronger, sleeping better, or simply proving to ourselves that we can do it, it shifts the whole game.

As Bethany wisely says, the best time to start isn’t when the calendar flips. It’s when you’re ready to make a change, for you.

Finding your own why

I think we’re seeing a shift in how people approach fitness now, especially in Britain. It’s no longer just about a "New Year, New Me" approach. People are finally realising that it’s not about chasing some unattainable image.

It's about creating a sustainable, healthy relationship with ourselves.

We’re learning to focus less on fitting into society’s mold and more on building a lifestyle that supports our unique needs and goals.

Whether you’re in London, Brighton, or Ghana, remember: it’s not about when you start taking care of yourself; it’s about why you’re doing it, and most importantly, it should always be for you.

  • I watched Pete Wicks Exclusive: "I Don't Think That I'm Enough" on the We Need to Talk podcast, and it was sensational! A must-watch! (The level of vulnerability and transparency in this conversation, wow.)

  • Song of the week: So Good by Mannywellz.

  • Food of the week: I had the sexiest Sunday roast with my cousin at STK on Sunday, and I’m not ashamed to admit we both cleared the plate!

  • I haven’t bought anything this week, but I did buy some slippers for my holiday last month, and they are amazing. They’re rubber but look like leather—perfect for a holiday because you can get them wet at the beach or in the sand, and they get covered in yellow/orange dust, yet still look brand new after a while! I wore them out on my trip, and they still look brand new!

  • "Without commitment, you'll never start. Without consistency, you'll never finish."

Big love as always,

P.S catch me next week for some more tea and maybe some biscuits too!
