My journey with God started long before I even understood what faith really meant.
I was born into a deeply religious family, my mum was passionate about church, and by the time I was a teenager, my sisters and I were part of the altar service team.
From birth to about age 16, going to church wasn’t exactly a choice; it was an expectation, part of the routine.
Things shifted when I went to college, around 17 or 18. That’s when I found my own church with my cousin Shirley – Ruach City Church in Brixton.
The first sermon I attended by Bishop John Francis was life-changing. It was nothing like the monotonous Catholic services I’d grown up with. This was something else entirely, people were shouting, passionate, bringing the scriptures to life in a way I’d never experienced before.
How My Faith Has Evolved
My relationship with God has grown so much since those early days. It’s no longer just about routine. These days, I talk about God like a close mate. I’m not shy about bringing Him into conversations, even with people I don’t know well.
Where I used to feel awkward or hesitant about mentioning my faith, I now see it as a way to create meaningful relationships.
That doesn’t mean it’s always been easy. Staying consistent has been my biggest spiritual challenge.
As someone who loves a good to-do list, I realised I needed to put prayer at the very top. Honestly, that small change was a game-changer.
Even on holiday or on those days when my spirit felt “off” and I didn’t know what to pray, just seeing prayer on the list reminded me not to skip it.
Spiritual Anchors and Growth
Two scriptures have become my daily go-to’s:
Proverbs 31 (I want to be that woman so badly!)
1 Corinthians 13 – because really, “What is life without love?”
These verses became my spiritual compass, keeping me intentional in my faith.
I won’t lie and say I’ve got it all figured out. Far from it. Guilt is a constant companion, I know I fall short, over and over again.
But here’s the thing I’ve come to realise: God’s love isn’t conditional. He knew every mistake I’d make long before I made them, and he's still there, arms wide open.
My prayers aren’t always eloquent. Sometimes they’re just scattered words; other times, they’re honest conversations.
What I’ve learned is that what really matters is the posture of my heart. As long as I come with genuine repentance and a desire to connect, I know it’ll all be OK.
Key Lessons in My Faith Journey
Authenticity over perfection: Spiritual growth isn’t about being flawless.
Intentional connection: Create practices that resonate with you.
Embrace grace: Your journey is uniquely yours, imperfections and all.
Practical Tips for Spiritual Growth
Put prayer on your to-do list.
Read scriptures that speak to your heart.
Remember: consistency matters far more than perfection.
True spiritual connection comes from the heart, not from ticking religious boxes.
