More Men Are Getting Botox, Filler and Even Surgery...Let's Talk About It
There was an increase during the pandemic of men looking for procedures, due to the “zoom face”, the process of staring at, and finding fault with, your own features for hours...
Success doesn’t follow a set timeline, and sometimes the path to finding your true purpose takes longer than expected. At 30, I stepped away from the corporate world and leapt into entrepreneurship. I’ve been running my aesthetic business for six years now and I’m finally ready to share my life and business lessons.
Girl,
Believe it or not, more men are now opting for Botox, fillers, cosmetic surgery, and other aesthetic treatments than ever before.
Once upon a time, men shied away from the idea, fearful of ending up with that "plastic" look or having a frozen face. Some even made fun at women for “getting a little work done.” But now? Once they see those forehead lines disappear, they’re hooked, coming back every three months like clockwork.
While I mainly service women (always open to men) I’ve noticed a rise in men getting the needle from my friends and I've seen the stats.
So, What’s Really Going On?
Let’s talk numbers. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, men’s spending on Botox has grown by 400% since 2000.
In 2020 alone, about 265,000 men underwent Botox treatments. This rise is not just about vanity; it reflects a cultural shift where everyone, no matter their gender, is feeling more comfortable prioritising self-care and embracing anti-aging treatments.
For those unfamiliar, Botox is a neurotoxin injected into specific muscles to relax them, which reduces wrinkles and fine lines.
But it doesn’t stop there. Botox is also used to treat issues like neck spasms, excessive sweating, migraines, and even lazy eye.
This makes it a multipurpose treatment that goes beyond aesthetics and into overall wellness. But most people don’t know this or choose to ignore it’s other benefits.
But it’s not just the Botox:
Male cosmetic surgery, dubbed the “daddy do-over”, is on the rise. In 2021, the top cosmetic surgical procedures for men were identified as rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, cheek implants, breast reduction, liposuction, tummy tuck and ear surgery. Read more on this here
So, Why Are Men Getting Work Done?
In short: for the same reasons anyone else does.
Aging is universal, and everyone has their own feelings about how they age.
Whether it’s wanting to maintain a refreshed appearance for personal confidence or to stay competitive in a career, men are realising that getting work done can subtly help their look without changing who they are.
A 2019 report revealed that male demand for cosmetic procedures was on the rise before Covid-19. The report was by The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons
While treatments were temporarily on pause during global lockdowns, there was an increase during the pandemic in men looking for procedures, due to the phenomenon of “zoom face” – the process of staring at, and finding fault with, your own features for hours during Zoom meetings.
Can Botox Really Be Gendered?
Men might hesitate because Botox or even fillers traditionally carries a “feminine” stereotype, but honestly, does it really need to be?
Everyone deserves to feel good about how they look. Whether you’re a first-timer or an old pro, Botox is for anyone who wants to invest in themselves, no questions asked.
Who doesn’t love a well groomed man anyways?
