A Day in the Life of a Beauty Business Owner: Let’s Get Into It
This is what it really looks like
Success doesn’t follow a set timeline, and sometimes the path to finding your true purpose takes longer than expected. At 30, I stepped away from the corporate world and leapt into entrepreneurship. I’ve been running my aesthetic business for six years now and I’m finally ready to share my life and business lessons.
07:00 – Morning Routine
As soon as I wake up, I thank God and then take a moment for gratitude.
Depending on my mood, I might listen to Joyce Meyer, Steven Furtick, Sarah Jakes Roberts, T.D. Jakes, or whoever’s message resonates with me that day. I’m also working through a Bible in 365 days program, so I read my daily passage, followed by a morning sermon on Spotify.
Then, I head out for a walk, aiming to hit my 10,000 steps before breakfast.
Now, the 10k steps are definitely for both health and vanity purposes (yes, I want to look good, too!), but honestly, at one point in my life, I was struggling with what I think was anxiety (self-diagnosed).
Getting out into nature for long walks has made a world of difference for my mind. Even when it's raining or snowing, you’ll find me out there with my wellies, raincoat, and gloves, nothing’s stopping me!
Morning Routine & To-Do Lists
I like to kick off my day with a plan. My mornings are guided by alarms and to-do lists; they keep me focused and help me set clear intentions for the day.
I tend to have a bit of a scattered mind, get bored easily, and I love a good time, so the to-do list is a must! It's helped me develop a productive routine rather than just going with the flow. Plus, there’s nothing more satisfying than ticking off those tasks—honestly, it gets a bit addictive!
I always tell people, "I’ve got three alarms in my day: one to get me going in the morning, another to check in on my goals at midday, and a final one in the evening to wind things down." I even include personal stuff, like catching up with two friends a week, on my list because it’s important to balance relationships alongside work.
09:00 – 12pm Work Mode
Back home and ready to get into work mode, I start with a fresh celery and apple juice to set the tone.
Today’s a busy one with a few brow treatments lined up: two brow laminations and a microblading session.
I love the diversity of my clients; I met two lovely women from Manchester today. One of them brought her boyfriend along, and his reaction to the process was priceless.
As he watched the microblading process in shock, with the look of pain in his eyes, he said: "I can’t believe what you women go through to look good!". That comment had us all cracking up.
It’s little moments like these that make my job so enjoyable.
Then, there was this heartwarming moment when one of my clients came in a bit early and joined the conversation I was having with another client.
It turned into a deep, soulful chat, and before I knew it, we were all opening up to each other. One of them even asked if we could pray together, it was such a special moment. The studio really felt like a safe space that day.
Balancing Work and Life
Being a beauty business owner is all about finding that balance, and I’ve developed a routine that works for me. When you work for yourself, there are no KPIs; you set your own. Having a structure with my to-do lists helps keep me grounded when things get hectic. My schedule gives me the flexibility I need, but also enough discipline to make sure my work and personal life are in harmony.
15:00 – A Quick Pivot
Then, out of the blue, a friend messaged me saying we were going to a movie premiere that night! I love a bit of spontaneity, so I quickly got ready after my last appointment and headed out.
19:00 – Glitz and Glam
At the premiere with my friend, we had an absolute blast. I love that my business allows me the flexibility to still enjoy social events like this without feeling tied down to a rigid work schedule.
23:00 – Wind Down
By the time I got home, I tried to unwind with an episode of EastEnders, but I was so knackered that I fell asleep halfway through. And that was the end of my busy but fulfilling day!
Reflecting on My 9-to-5 Days
I remember when I used to live for Christmas & New Year in Ghana, also known as Detty December. My old job would always kick up a fuss about me taking time off during that period, they'd say, "The business needs come first!" Now, I’m so grateful that’s a thing of the past. These days, my business needs come first, and funny enough, Detty December doesn’t seem quite as important anymore.
